Links

I’ve collected some of my favourite websites that tell a story of a beautiful and diverse world. Explore these, bookmark a few. The stories they tell are sure to inspire.

Stuff Expat Aid Workers Like (http://stuffexpataidworkerslike.com/). Want to know what it’s like being a world traveler? This blog, with contribution from aid workers all over the world, describes our idiosyncracies insightfully, from the perspective of people who have been on the road for a while.

Global Voices (http://globalvoicesonline.org). I only recently discovered this website. It’s rich with social, cultural, artistic and other interesting commentary on places all around the world. My only complaint is that they have more good content than I have time to read.

Project Pen (http://projectpen.me/) A blog completely dedicated to giving voice to emerging writers in the Middle East. It features fiction and poetry and other literary forms in small doses, and some is in Arabic but most is in English. I appreciate it not just for the good writing, but for the cultural window into the way Middle Eastern artists see the world.

PostSecret (http://www.postsecret.com/). This isn’t a cross-cultural site, per se, but it’s a beautiful idea, collecting stories from many different types of people with many different personal experiences, using artistic postcards. It’s updated weekly - visit it and be encouraged!

Your Middle East (http://www.yourmiddleeast.com/). My favourite source of news from the Middle East (and founded by someone I used to volunteer with in Syria - bonus points for a personal connection to a really pretty awesome news source).

Here are some great organisations doing fun work in interesting places, bringing people together…

Middle East Fellowship (http://www.middleeastfellowship.org/). This group does lots of great stuff to bring people together. I assisted them with their Damascus Summer Encounter, a programme for people from anywhere in the world to visit Syria and spend time getting to know Syrians, Iraqis and others.

Capoeira project: Bidna Capoeira (http://www.bidnacapoeira.org/). Capoeira, a Brazilian dance-slash-martial-art, is a great sport for teaching social skills and unity and healthy interaction to youth. There are several great capoeira projects around the world. I chose this to mention here because I saw this project with refugees in Syria and LOVE what they do.

Questscope (http://www.questscope.net/). This Jordanian NGO with programming throughout the Middle East has a great vision of social development: education, life skills, reinforcing people’s sense of self-confidence and morale. I’m a fan.

Some cool on-line tools for the world traveller and writer… Umas ferramentas boas para quem viaja e escreve…

Otlob.com (http://www.otlob.com). OK, this will only ever be useful to you if you’re in Egypt or a handful of other Arab countries. But it’s such a perfect idea, I want to toot its horn. Just visit and prepared to wonder why the rest of the world hasn’t started doing this!
** (http://www.otlob.com).

Momondo (http://www.momondo.com). If you have to buy a plane ticket, go to Momondo. They have the best variety of good prices I know of, and are very, very user-friendly.
** (http://www.momondo.pt/).

OmmWriter (http://www.ommwriter.com). If you are a writer and even the slightest bit prone to distrction, download this application for your computer. It will change your life.
** (http://www.ommwriter.com/).

My two favourite major international humantarian organisations:
As minhas duas agências humanitárias internacionais prediletas:

Catholic Relief Services: http://www.crs.org

World Vision: http://www.worldvision.org/
**Visāo Mundial: http://www.visaomundial.org.br/
